Interior Painting for Grand Rapids Properties

Interior painting is the repaint most Grand Rapids homeowners start with: a bedroom that feels dated, a living room with scuffed walls, a hallway no one has touched since the last move. It looks simple, but the result comes from the work around the painting, such as covering furniture, filling and sanding, masking trim and priming stains.

Older homes in neighborhoods like Heritage Hill and Alger Heights often have plaster walls and decades of paint layers, which means more scraping and patching than a newer drywall house. Michigan's long heating season also dries out interiors, opening hairline cracks at corners and ceiling lines that show up the moment light rakes across a freshly painted wall.

We repaint single rooms, whole floors and complete interiors, and we keep the sequence consistent: ceilings first, then walls, then trim and doors, so a drip never lands on finished work.

Signs it is time to repaint your interior

  • Scuffs, handprints and marks that no longer wipe clean
  • Yellowed or dingy white ceilings and walls, especially in kitchens and stairwells
  • Hairline cracks at corners and ceiling lines after a dry heating season
  • Peeling or bubbling paint near bathrooms and windows where moisture collects
  • Water stains that were fixed at the source but still show through
  • A color chosen years ago that no longer fits the room

How an interior painting job goes

  1. Walk-through and color talk

We look at each room, check the condition of the walls and talk through colors and sheen: flat for ceilings, eggshell or satin for living areas, semi-gloss for trim.

  2. Protect your home

Floors and fixtures are covered, furniture is moved to the center of the room and trim edges are masked.

  3. Repair and prime

Nail holes, cracks and dents are filled and sanded. Stains and bare spots are primed so they do not bleed through the new color.

  4. Paint in order

Ceilings first, walls second, trim and doors last, with as many coats as the surface needs.

  5. Clean up and walk-through

Tape comes off, touch-ups are done and the room is returned to you clean.

What affects the cost of interior painting

Every interior is different, so we quote each job after seeing it. These factors move the price the most:

  • Square footage of walls and ceilings, and the ceiling height
  • Condition of the surfaces: patching, sanding and priming add time
  • Number of coats, especially for a big color change such as dark to light
  • Amount of trim, doors, closets and built-ins
  • How much furniture has to be moved or covered
  • Paint quality and the sheen you choose

Why Grand Rapids homeowners choose AAR for interior painting

Interior work happens in your home, so how a painter treats your space matters as much as how the wall looks. Alvaro has painted for 13 years, and the crew he works with, his brother and cousin, protects floors and furniture and leaves a clean room behind.

Indoor projects do not depend on the weather, so they can be scheduled in any season, which helps through the Grand Rapids winters when exterior work stops.

We repaint interiors in Grand Rapids and the surrounding cities. See our Grand Rapids painting page and Wyoming painting page.

Interior Painting FAQs

How many coats of paint will my walls need?

Most repaints need a primer where there are stains or repairs and two finish coats. A small color change over a clean, sound wall can sometimes get by with fewer. We confirm the coat count when we look at the room.

Do you move furniture before painting?

We move or center furniture and cover it, along with floors and fixtures. For heavy or fragile pieces, it helps if you clear the room or tell us in advance what should stay put.

Can you cover a dark wall color with a lighter one?

Yes. Going from dark to light usually takes a stain-blocking primer plus extra finish coats, so it is quoted with that added work in mind. Tell us the current color and the one you want.

How long does it take to paint a bedroom?

A typical bedroom is often a day or two of work including drying time between coats, depending on the repairs needed and whether ceilings and trim are included.

Which paint sheen should I pick for walls and trim?

Flat or matte hides imperfections on ceilings, eggshell or satin suits most living areas and bedrooms, and semi-gloss stands up to wiping on trim, doors and kitchens or baths. We can recommend sheens room by room.
